Where will ads be displayed on ChatGPT? Let's make some bets.
It took quite some time before we saw Google and Meta becoming the media machines we all know today, with ads more or less intrusive.
I predict it's just a matter of time before ads will pop up for ChatGPT or similar products; the question is how.
Interestingly, the difference between ChatGPT and Google/Facebook is that right away there's a freemium model: try before you buy with limited features. For now, the counterpart of the free model is that chats can be used can be seen by a third party, and conversations are used for training.
I don't see why we shouldn't expect a new offering: freemium++ where you have the same features of ChatGPT, but with ads appearing here and there.
There are the ugly, intrusive banners that people have, for some reason, learned over time to ignore, unless they are truly intrusive by hiding the screen for a significant amount of time.
When you watch videos on YouTube, influencers have dropped the idea of being paid with ads from Google; they now work with an agency and integrate the ad content into their videos as part of it.
So what would stop OpenAI from doing the same if they have a freemium++ model?
When you Google "pizzeria in town," SEO is at play to display results. When you type the same query on ChatGPT (or any similar tools), it's quite unclear for now what the triggers are to influence the search results.
But it does make sense for a marketer to pay what it takes so that the answer from ChatGPT would be genuine when asking a similar question.
The question is: will it be done in such a way that nobody would see the difference between a genuine result and a sponsored one?
